The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and chock the wheels.
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position (engine does not need to run).
- Locate the shift-lock override slot: it is a small covered access near the shifter base on the console, typically forward and to the right of the shifter itself or directly in front of the shifter button.
- Remove the small plastic cover cap (it may snap or pry out gently with a flathead screwdriver or trim tool).
- While depressing the brake pedal, insert a screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
- Remove the tool and replace the cover cap.
Shift-lock override location
The shift-lock override access is a small rectangular or circular slot covered by a snap-in cap, located on the console immediately forward or to the right of the shifter base. Look for a small removable panel near the shifter button side.
With zero electrical power
If the battery is completely dead and the ignition cannot be turned to ACC, the shift-lock override will still function mechanically—you do not need electrical power to use the override slot. Simply pry off the cover and use the override tool to release the shifter. However, without power you cannot use the ignition switch to verify position; work carefully and confirm the shifter is in Neutral before attempting to move the car.
