The 2009 Kia Rondo uses a conventional center-console mounted shifter with electronic shift lock controlled by the brake-light switch.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Locate the shift-lock override slot on the console near the shifter—look for a small rectangular cap or cover directly ahead of (forward from) the shifter base on the console trim
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the small access cover
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral
- If the override does not release the shifter, verify you are pressing straight down with adequate force—the mechanical release requires firm pressure
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular access slot with removable cover located forward of the shifter base on the center console, typically on the left side of the shifter shroud
With zero electrical power
The shift-lock override is a mechanical release that works without any electrical power. With a completely dead battery, you will not have power windows, door locks, or dash lights, but the override mechanism itself does not require power to function. Ensure you are applying firm downward pressure when activating the override.
