🚨 2012 Kia Rondo: Emergency Neutral

The 2012 Kia Rondo uses a traditional console-mounted automatic shifter with a P-R-N-D-L gate and electronic shift-lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift-lock override slot on the console—look for a small rectangular cap or cover near the base of the shifter, typically on the left side or front edge
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the override cover cap
  5. Insert the screwdriver or a similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral
  7. If no power is available, continue holding the override mechanism down while pulling the shifter toward Neutral—it may require firm pressure
  8. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or towed with all wheels down for short distances
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular cap near the shifter base, typically on the left side or forward edge of the shifter console—exact position may vary slightly between trim levels
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the shift-lock override is purely mechanical and will still function. The override bypass releases the shifter lock pin even without electrical power. You may need to turn the key to unlock the steering column separately.
