The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift-lock override slot on the console—look for a small rectangular cap or cover near the base of the shifter, typically on the left side or front edge
- Use a flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the override cover cap
- Insert the screwdriver or a similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If no power is available, continue holding the override mechanism down while pulling the shifter toward Neutral—it may require firm pressure
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or towed with all wheels down for short distances
