🚨 2011-2024 Kia Sedona: Emergency Neutral
The 2011-2024 Kia Sedona (renamed Carnival in 2022) uses a console-mounted automatic shifter; earlier models have a traditional lever, while 2022+ Carnival models use an electronic push-button shifter.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and wheels are chocked.
- For 2011-2021 models: Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON if battery power is available.
- For 2022+ Carnival: Press the START button without brake pedal to enter ACC mode if battery has any charge.
- If the vehicle does not shift out of Park with brake pedal pressed, locate the shift-lock override.
- For 2011-2021: The shift-lock override is a small rectangular slot with a plastic cap, located on the console trim to the left of the shifter base. Remove the cap with a flathead screwdriver.
- For 2022+ Carnival with push-button shifter: The shift-lock override is accessed via a small cap on the center console near the shifter panel. Remove the cap to access the manual release slot.
- Insert a screwdriver or key blade into the override slot and press down firmly while moving the shifter to Neutral (2011-2021) or pressing the N button (2022+).
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or towed.
Shift-lock override location
2011-2021: Small slot with cap on console trim to the left of shifter base. 2022+ Carnival: Small cap near the push-button shifter panel on center console.
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, you cannot energize the ignition. The shift-lock override is mechanical for 2011-2021 models and does not require power—use the override slot to shift to Neutral. For 2022+ Carnival with electronic shifter, the override may allow manual release, but with zero power the electronic transmission may not disengage Park reliably; flatbed towing with all wheels off the ground or dollies under the front wheels is strongly recommended. Steering will be locked without power; unlock by inserting key and wiggling the steering wheel.
