🚨 1994-2001 Kia Sephia: Emergency Neutral

The 1994-2001 Kia Sephia (spanning both first and second generation models) uses a floor-mounted console shifter with cable-actuated shift-lock interlock controlled by the brake-light switch.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground with the parking brake firmly engaged
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if any battery power is available
  3. Locate the shift-lock override access point - look for a small cover or slot near the shifter base, typically on the left side or forward of the shifter button on the console
  4. Remove the override cover using a small flathead screwdriver, key blade, or your fingernail
  5. Insert a small screwdriver, pen, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override mechanism down, press the brake pedal and shift to Neutral
  7. If the shifter resists, maintain firm pressure on the override and use moderate force on the shifter lever
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular or circular access slot near the shifter base on the console, commonly on the left side or forward area of the shifter housing - location varies between first generation (1994-1997) and second generation (1998-2001) due to console redesign
With zero electrical power
With zero battery power, the shift-lock solenoid may remain mechanically engaged. The override mechanism is purely mechanical and does not require electrical power to function. Insert the override tool and apply steady, firm pressure while attempting to shift. Dead battery conditions may require slightly more force on the override mechanism.
