🚨 2022 Kia Sorento PHEV: Emergency Neutral

The 2022 Sorento PHEV features a console-mounted electronic shift lever with electronic shift-by-wire operation and a mechanical override access point.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if not already engaged.
  2. Attempt to turn the ignition to ON or ACC position - even a weak battery may provide enough power for shifter release.
  3. Locate the shift lock override cover on the left side of the shifter base, near where the shifter meets the center console.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver, ignition key, or similar flat tool to pry off the small rectangular override cover cap.
  5. Insert the tool into the exposed shift lock override slot and push down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal if any electrical power is present.
  7. Move the shift lever to the Neutral position while maintaining pressure on the override release.
  8. If successful, the shifter will move to N and remain there; verify by attempting to roll the vehicle slightly.
Shift-lock override location
Left side of the shifter base assembly, accessed via a small rectangular cover cap approximately 1 inch from the shifter lever itself at console surface level.
With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the shift lock override provides mechanical release - no power is required for the override itself to function. However, you will have no dashboard indication of gear position. The PHEV system will be completely shut down. IMPORTANT: If the electronic parking brake (EPB) was engaged when the battery died, you may need to manually release the EPB before the vehicle can move - consult owner's manual Section 6 for EPB manual release procedure using the EPB switch access point.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
MANDATORY FLATBED TOW ONLY: The Sorento PHEV has electric motors mechanically coupled to the drivetrain. NEVER tow this vehicle with any wheels on the ground. Doing so will rotate the electric motors, generating uncontrolled high voltage that will severely damage the hybrid/electrical system and poses serious fire risk. All four wheels must be off the ground on a flatbed or use wheel dollies. Verify the high-voltage system is OFF (orange READY light is not illuminated) before loading.
