🚨 2023 Kia Sorento PHEV: Emergency Neutral

The 2023 Sorento PHEV uses a console-mounted electronic shifter with shift-by-wire technology and a mechanical shift lock override access.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake if not already applied and ensure the vehicle is on level ground.
  2. Try to power the vehicle to ON or ACC mode - even minimal battery voltage may allow normal shifter operation.
  3. Locate the shift lock override access cover on the left side of the shifter housing at the console base.
  4. Carefully pry off the small rectangular override cover using a flathead screwdriver, key, or trim tool.
  5. Insert your tool into the shift lock override slot and press down firmly to release the mechanical lock.
  6. While maintaining pressure on the override, press the brake pedal if any power is available.
  7. Move the shifter to Neutral position - you should feel the mechanical release allow movement.
  8. Confirm Neutral engagement by attempting to move the vehicle slightly (with appropriate safety precautions).

With zero electrical power
The mechanical shift lock override works without any electrical power - it's a purely mechanical release mechanism. With dead battery, you will have no gear position indicators on the dashboard and no interior lights. The PHEV high-voltage system will be completely inactive. CRITICAL: If the electronic parking brake was engaged, a dead 12V battery may prevent EPB release - you must manually release the EPB using the emergency release procedure (typically involves removing a cover near the EPB switch and pulling a mechanical release) before the vehicle can be moved.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
FLATBED OR DOLLY TOW ONLY - NO EXCEPTIONS: The Sorento PHEV has electric drive motors directly connected to the wheels through the transmission. Towing with ANY wheels on the ground will force the motors to generate electricity with no control system active, causing catastrophic damage to the hybrid system, battery, and inverter, and creating significant fire hazard. Vehicle must be transported on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground or using appropriate wheel dollies on all four corners. Ensure READY indicator is OFF before transport.
