🚨 2024 Kia Sorento PHEV: Emergency Neutral
The 2024 Sorento PHEV features a console-mounted electronic shift lever with electronic shift control and mechanical override capability.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Verify the parking brake is applied and the vehicle is on level, stable ground.
- Attempt to turn the ignition to ACC or ON position first - this may restore shifter function if battery has minimal charge.
- Find the shift lock override cover on the left side of the shifter base where it meets the center console.
- Use a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar flat tool to carefully pop off the small override access cover.
- Insert the tool into the shift lock override slot and push down firmly to compress the override mechanism.
- While holding the override depressed, press the brake pedal if electrical power is present.
- Move the shift lever to the Neutral position while maintaining override pressure - the shifter should release and move.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle is free to roll - ensure someone is controlling the vehicle at all times.
Shift-lock override location

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the mechanical shift lock override functions without power - it's a physical mechanism that releases the shifter lock. You will have no dashboard display, no gear indicator, and no interior lighting. The plug-in hybrid system will be completely shut down with no high-voltage active. IMPORTANT: The electronic parking brake (EPB) may be locked if it was engaged when power was lost. You must manually release the EPB before moving the vehicle - see owner's manual for EPB emergency release procedure, which typically involves an access panel and mechanical release mechanism.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL TOWING REQUIREMENT - FLATBED ONLY: The Sorento PHEV must NEVER be towed with any wheels touching the ground. The electric motors are permanently connected to the drivetrain, and towing with wheels down will force them to generate uncontrolled high voltage, causing severe damage to the battery, inverter, motor controllers, and electrical system. This also creates serious fire risk. Use only flatbed towing with all four wheels completely off the ground, or use wheel dollies on all wheels. Confirm the vehicle is powered OFF (no READY light) before loading onto flatbed.
