🚨 2025 Kia Sorento PHEV: Emergency Neutral

The 2025 Sorento PHEV retains the console-mounted electronic shift lever with electronic shift-by-wire system and mechanical shift lock override.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is set and the vehicle is positioned on level ground for safety.
  2. First attempt to power the vehicle to ON or ACC mode - even low battery may provide enough power for normal operation.
  3. Locate the shift lock override cover on the left side of the shifter base at the center console.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver, key, or plastic trim tool to gently pry off the small rectangular override access cover.
  5. Insert your tool into the exposed shift lock override slot and press down firmly to release the mechanism.
  6. While maintaining downward pressure on the override, press the brake pedal if any electrical power is available.
  7. Move the shift lever to Neutral while continuing to hold the override - the shifter should release and move freely to N position.
  8. Verify Neutral by checking if the vehicle can roll (with proper safety measures in place).

With zero electrical power
The shift lock override is a mechanical system requiring no electrical power to function. With a completely dead 12V battery, you'll have no dashboard indicators, no lights, and no display feedback, but the override will still mechanically release the shifter lock. The high-voltage PHEV system will be completely inactive. CRITICAL NOTE: If the electronic parking brake (EPB) was engaged when battery died, it will remain locked. Before attempting to move the vehicle, you must perform the EPB manual release procedure found in the owner's manual - this typically involves accessing a release mechanism near the EPB switch.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
ABSOLUTE REQUIREMENT - FLATBED TOW ONLY: This plug-in hybrid has electric motors permanently connected to the drivetrain. Towing the Sorento PHEV with ANY wheels on the ground will cause the motors to spin and generate uncontrolled high voltage with no active control system, resulting in catastrophic damage to the battery pack, power inverter, motor controllers, and wiring harness. This also poses significant fire and safety risks. The vehicle MUST be transported on a flatbed with all four wheels completely off the ground, or using wheel dollies on all four corners. Verify the vehicle is fully powered down (READY light OFF) before transport.
