🚨 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid: Emergency Neutral

The 2023 Sportage Hybrid uses a conventional electronic shifter lever on the center console with electronic shift-by-wire transmission control.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake fully
  2. Locate the shift lock override — there is a small rectangular cover cap forward and to the right of the shifter base on the console
  3. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal emergency key blade to pry off the override cover
  4. Insert the screwdriver or key into the exposed override slot and press down firmly
  5. While holding the override depressed, press the brake pedal (if power available) or use firm pressure to move the shifter to Neutral
  6. If the vehicle has no electrical power, continue pressing the override and shift to Neutral — it will release mechanically
  7. Keep the override pressed if needed to prevent the shifter from returning to Park

With zero electrical power
With no 12V power, the mechanical shift lock override allows shifter movement. Press the override firmly and shift to Neutral with steady force. The steering lock will remain engaged with no power — vehicle must be dollied or flatbedded, not steered or rolled long distances.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID VEHICLE: Do NOT flat-tow or tow with two wheels on the ground — serious transmission and hybrid system damage will result. The hybrid system should be fully OFF before towing. If the 12V battery is dead and you cannot power the system on to properly shut it down, connect a jump pack or booster to restore 12V power, turn the system ON (don't start the engine), shift to Neutral, then power OFF completely before loading onto a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground.
