The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake
- Locate the shift lock override cover — a small rectangular cap forward and to the right of the shifter base on the console trim
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the vehicle's metal emergency key to pry off the override cap
- Insert the tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override button down, press the brake pedal if 12V power is available, or simply apply firm pressure to move the shifter to Neutral
- If there is no electrical power, keep the override depressed and shift to Neutral with steady force — the mechanical release will allow movement
- Maintain pressure on the override if the shifter tries to spring back to Park

If the 12V battery is completely dead, use a portable jump starter to restore power, turn the vehicle to ON mode (do not start), shift to Neutral if necessary, then turn OFF before loading onto a flatbed. All four wheels must be off the ground during towing.
