The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake fully
- Locate the shift lock override access — a small rectangular cover forward and to the right of the shifter base on the console
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal emergency key blade to carefully pry off the override cover cap
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override pressed, press the brake pedal if 12V power is present, or use firm steady pressure to move the shifter to Neutral
- If no electrical power is available, maintain pressure on the override and shift to Neutral — the mechanical release will engage
- Keep the override depressed if the shifter attempts to return to Park position
