⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake fully
- Locate the shift lock override slot — it is a small rectangular cover directly forward of the shifter base on the right side of the shifter surround
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the override cover cap
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if 12V power is available) or simply move the shifter to Neutral
- If no power is available, continue holding the override down and use firm pressure to move the shifter — it should release mechanically
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved; keep the override tool in place if the shifter tries to return to Park

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock override provides mechanical release. Insert tool into override slot, press down firmly, and shift to Neutral with steady pressure. The electronic shifter may feel stiff but will release mechanically. The steering wheel will be locked; do NOT attempt to steer — this is for loading onto a flatbed only.

HYBRID VEHICLE: The hybrid system must be OFF before towing. Do NOT flat-tow this vehicle under any circumstances — transmission damage will occur. If the 12V battery is dead, you cannot properly shut down the hybrid system. Use a jump starter or battery booster to power up the vehicle, press the Power button to ON (without starting), shift to Neutral using the override if needed, then power OFF before loading onto a flatbed. All four wheels must be off the ground during transport.
