⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular opening with a plastic cover near the base of the shifter lever on the console
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool to remove the plastic cover over the override slot
- Insert the screwdriver or a key into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If no power is available, continue holding the override down and physically move the shifter to Neutral - it may require firm pressure
- Keep the override pressed until the shifter is fully in Neutral position
- Remove the tool and reinstall the cover cap
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot near the base of the shifter console, typically on the left or front side of the shifter boot - look for a removable plastic cap approximately 10-15mm in size
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the override slot is purely mechanical. You will NOT need to turn the key. Simply remove the cover, insert a tool into the override slot, press down firmly, and move the shifter to Neutral with physical force. The mechanism may feel stiff but should release.
