⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Engage the parking brake and chock all wheels to prevent rolling.
- Locate the small plastic cap covering the shift-lock override on the center console near the shifter base (commonly found on the left side or forward of the shifter).
- Remove the cap using a flathead screwdriver or plastic pry tool.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the vehicle's emergency key blade into the shift-lock override slot.
- Apply firm downward pressure on the override release mechanism.
- If any electrical power is present, press the brake pedal while holding the override down and move the shifter to neutral.
- If completely without power, maintain pressure on the override and manually move the shifter through its mechanical gate to neutral.
- Reinstall the override cap after the shifter is in neutral.
Shift-lock override location
Plastic cap near the shifter base on the center console, typically on the left side or forward relative to the shifter gate; location should be verified by visual inspection of the specific vehicle.
With zero electrical power
With a dead battery, the electronic shift-by-wire will not function, but the mechanical shift-lock override operates independently of electrical power. Press firmly on the override release while moving the shifter—do not attempt to force the shifter without using the override. The key does not need to be in any particular position when the battery is dead.
