⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
- Locate the shift lock override slot - look for a small covered slot or cap near the base of the shifter on the console, typically on the left side or front of the shifter assembly.
- Remove the cap by prying gently with a flat tool (screwdriver or trim tool).
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if battery has enough charge) and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If completely dead with no power, keep the override pressed and attempt to move the shifter - you may need to rock the vehicle slightly or have an assistant help move the shifter with firm force while the override is engaged.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed.
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the shifter console, typically under a small cap on the left or front side of the shifter - exact location may require inspection as service documentation for override specifics is limited for this model
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift lock override must be used. The override mechanically releases the shifter lock. You may need to apply significant force to move the shifter even with the override engaged, as the electronic actuators will not assist. If the steering lock is engaged, steering will remain locked even in Neutral. Consider battery jump or flatbed towing as primary options.
