🚨 2025 Land Rover Defender 110: Emergency Neutral

The 2025 Defender 110 hybrid uses a traditional center console shift lever with electronic Park lock controlled by the brake interlock system.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly (if functional).
  2. Turn the ignition to ON/Accessory position if you have any 12V power available.
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small covered opening on the right side of the shifter base near the console trim.
  4. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or the key blade to remove the small plastic cover cap.
  5. Insert the screwdriver or a rigid tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, pull the shift lever rearward to move from Park to Neutral.
  7. If the vehicle has NO power at all, you MUST use the override - the shifter will not release from Park without either electrical power or mechanical override activation.
  8. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or loaded onto a flatbed.
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot on the right side of the shifter base, adjacent to the console trim - cover cap must be pried off first
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shifter remains locked in Park electronically. The mechanical shift lock override MUST be used - locate the override slot on the right side of the shifter base, remove the cover, and depress the release while shifting. The hybrid system will be completely inactive with no power.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID WARNING: Even in Neutral, the P400e hybrid system may engage the electric motor if any power is restored during towing. For distances over 1 mile or speeds over 3 mph, flatbed transport is MANDATORY. Do NOT flat-tow. If power is available, engage Transport/Tow mode through the touchscreen (Vehicle Settings > Towing) before moving.
