⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and parking brake is applied
- Turn the ignition to ON position if battery has any charge remaining (this may allow normal shift operation)
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small covered slot on the right side of the shifter base console
- Remove the small rectangular cover cap using a trim tool or flathead screwdriver
- Insert a screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if 12V power available) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If no electrical power, continue holding override and manually move shifter to Neutral - force may be required
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or winched

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock override still functions mechanically. Access the override slot as described, press and hold while applying firm pressure to move the shifter to Neutral. The high-voltage hybrid system does not need to be active for this override. You may need significant force to overcome the mechanical detent.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID WARNING: Even in Neutral with 12V dead, the high-voltage hybrid system may still have stored energy. Do NOT tow this vehicle with wheels on the ground - the electric motor is connected to the drivetrain and towing will generate electricity that can damage the hybrid system and create fire risk. FLATBED TRANSPORT ONLY. If you must move the vehicle a short distance (onto a flatbed), Neutral is acceptable, but never tow on the road.
