⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly applied and the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked.
- Turn the ignition to ON/Accessory position if 12V power is available (push start button without brake pedal).
- Locate the shift lock override slot on the right side of the shifter base, beneath a small removable cap or cover.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the mechanical key blade to pry off the override cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter out of Park.
- Move the shifter to Neutral and hold it there.
- If the shifter will not stay in Neutral, maintain pressure on the override slot while an assistant moves the vehicle, or use the manual park brake release if towing.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock override is mechanical and does not require battery power. Access the override slot as described and manually release the shifter. The hybrid system will be completely inactive; do not attempt to start or engage drive modes.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
This is a plug-in hybrid (P400e). With depleted 12V battery, the high-voltage hybrid system is disabled and the vehicle CANNOT propel itself. Do NOT attempt to flat-tow—the transmission and electric motor can be damaged. Use a flatbed or wheel-lift tow truck with rear wheels OFF the ground. Before towing, ensure the transmission is in Neutral and, if possible, engage Transport/Tow mode through the vehicle settings (requires 12V power or jump-start).
