🚨 2014 Land Rover Discovery: Emergency Neutral

The 2014 Discovery 4 (LR4 in North America) uses a traditional console-mounted automatic transmission gear selector lever with cable-actuated shift lock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly applied and the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked.
  2. Turn the ignition to position II (ON) if 12V power is available.
  3. Locate the shift lock override cover on the left side of the shifter base, just forward of the shifter boot.
  4. Pry off the small rectangular plastic cover using a flathead screwdriver or the mechanical key blade.
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key into the exposed override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding down the override, press the brake pedal (if power is available) and move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
  7. If no power is available, maintain pressure on the override slot and pull the shifter to Neutral without pressing the brake.
  8. The shifter should lock into Neutral; if it does not, hold it in position or have an assistant maintain the override while moving the vehicle.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock override is fully mechanical and does not require electrical power. Access the override slot as described, press down, and manually move the shifter to Neutral. The brake pedal will be very stiff (no power assist) but pressing it is not necessary for the override to work—only the mechanical override release is required.
