🚨 2016 Land Rover Discovery: Emergency Neutral
The 2016 Discovery (LR4 in US market, final year of this generation) uses a rotary gear selector dial on the center console that rises when the ignition is on.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake fully
- If the rotary dial has not risen (due to no power), you cannot electrically shift to neutral through normal means
- Locate the transmission shift lock override - it is accessed via a small plastic cap/cover on the center console near the rotary dial base
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the override access cover
- Insert a small screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, attempt to rotate the dial to neutral position (may require ignition in ACC mode if battery has minimal charge)
- If completely dead with no power, the transmission will need to be placed in neutral via the transmission itself - this requires accessing the transmission from underneath the vehicle
- For flatbed towing with no power to shift, load with all four wheels on the flatbed - do NOT tow with any wheels on the ground
Shift-lock override location
Small plastic cap near the base of the rotary gear selector dial on center console; exact position is typically to the right or front of the dial base
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the rotary dial will not rise and the electronic shifter will not function. The shift lock override may not work without at least ACC power. If completely dead, do NOT attempt to tow with wheels down - the transfer case and transmission cannot be safely placed in neutral without power. Flatbed towing only is required, or jump-start the vehicle to gain enough power to shift to neutral.
