🚨 2018 Land Rover Discovery: Emergency Neutral
The 2018 Discovery (L462 generation) uses an electronic rotary gear selector dial on the center console that rises when the vehicle is started.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake fully
- If battery is weak but not completely dead, press the brake pedal and push the start button to ACC or ON mode (without starting engine)
- The rotary dial should rise; rotate it to the neutral (N) position
- If the dial does not rise due to insufficient power, locate the shift lock release access cover on the center console
- The override access is typically a small rectangular or circular cap located near the rotary dial base, often toward the right side
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or trim removal tool to carefully pop off the access cover
- Insert a screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while attempting to rotate the dial to neutral
- If completely dead with zero power, the electronic shifter cannot be overridden manually - jump-start the vehicle or connect an external power source to gain at least accessory power
- Once in neutral, the vehicle can be moved, but for extended towing, flatbed is strongly recommended for AWD vehicles
Shift-lock override location
Small plastic access cover on the center console near the base of the rotary gear selector dial, typically on the right or forward side of the dial housing
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the rotary dial will not deploy and the electronic transmission shifter will not respond even to the override. You MUST provide some electrical power - either jump-start the 12V battery or connect a portable jump pack to get at least accessory power. Once accessory power is available, use the override release if the dial still won't rotate. Without any power, flatbed towing with all wheels up is the only safe option.
