The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- Turn the ignition key to position I (ACC) if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override slot on the left side of the shifter base, covered by a small rectangular plastic cap
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the emergency key blade to pry off the override cap
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral
- If successful, the shifter will release and move freely to Neutral position
- Keep foot on brake pedal during the entire procedure if any electrical power is available

With completely dead battery, the mechanical shift lock override will still function. You do not need any electrical power to use the override mechanism. The override physically disengages the solenoid lock. If the override does not work, the shift cable may be seized or the transmission park pawl may be stuck due to vehicle position on an incline.
