🚨 2003 Land Rover Freelander: Emergency Neutral
The 2003 Freelander uses a traditional center console-mounted automatic shift lever with a conventional PRND gate and electronic shift lock controlled by the brake interlock system.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override slot on the left side of the shifter base near the console trim
- Remove the small rectangular cover/cap (approximately 1 inch square) to expose the override slot
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the key blade into the override slot
- Press down firmly on the override release while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the lever to Neutral
- Keep the override depressed throughout the shift movement
- Once in Neutral, remove the tool and replace the cover

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift lock override will still function mechanically. You do NOT need battery power to use the override release - it is a purely mechanical bypass. However, ensure the ignition key is inserted (even with no power) as this may be required for the steering lock mechanism on some examples.
