🚨 2007 Land Rover Freelander: Emergency Neutral
The 2007 Freelander (LR2 in North America) represents the second generation with a redesigned center console shift lever, still using a conventional PRND gate with electronic shift lock and brake interlock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition key to position II (ON) if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override access - look for a small cover or slot near the base of the shifter on the driver's side
- Remove the small plastic cover to expose the shift lock override mechanism
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot
- Press and hold the override release while simultaneously pressing the shifter release button and moving to Neutral
- Maintain pressure on the override throughout the shift
- Once in Neutral, remove the tool and replace the cover
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the shifter assembly on the driver's side, accessed via a small plastic cover - exact configuration differs from first-generation models due to console redesign
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the mechanical shift lock override will still function without electrical power. This is a mechanical bypass system. Ensure the ignition key is in the ignition (even with no power) as some steering lock mechanisms may interact with the shift lock system.
