🚨 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport: Emergency Neutral
The 2023 Range Rover Sport (third generation redesign) features an electronic rotary gear selector that rises from the center console when powered.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
- Press the START/STOP button without pressing the brake pedal to turn the ignition to ON/Accessory mode, allowing the rotary shifter to rise.
- Press and hold the brake pedal, then rotate the dial to Neutral (N).
- If the shifter will not move due to shift interlock, locate the shift lock override - look for a small cover or cap near the base of the rotary selector on the center console.
- Remove the override cap using a trim tool or small flathead screwdriver.
- Insert the mechanical key blade or a small tool into the override slot and press/hold while rotating the dial to Neutral.
- If the vehicle has zero electrical power and the override does not allow mechanical rotation, the hybrid system may prevent movement - attempt to jump-start the 12V battery first.
Shift-lock override location
Small cover near the base of the rotary shifter on the center console; typically located to the side or front of the dial housing.
With zero electrical power
With no 12V power, the rotary dial will not rise and the shift lock remains engaged. Jump-start the vehicle using an external battery or battery pack to restore minimal power. The override slot may allow manual release, but the rotary mechanism itself may not rotate without some electrical power to disengage internal locks. If jump-starting is not possible, flatbed towing is required.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
This is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). Do NOT attempt to tow with drive wheels on the ground under any circumstances - the electric motor and transmission can be severely damaged. Always use a flatbed or trailer. If the high-voltage system is active and the vehicle cannot be shifted to Neutral, consult the emergency response guide for high-voltage disconnect procedures before towing.
