The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and parking brake is applied
- With dead battery, the rotary shifter dial will be retracted flush with the console surface
- Locate the shift lock override: a small plastic cap on the center console near the base of the shifter dial area
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the cap
- Insert a key, small screwdriver, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, attempt to manually raise the shifter dial if possible (it may remain flush)
- With override engaged and brake pedal pressed (if any power available), rotate where the dial would be to the Neutral position
- If dial cannot be raised, the transmission may need to be placed in neutral via the transmission itself underneath the vehicle
