🚨 2024 Land Rover Range Rover Velar: Emergency Neutral

The 2024 Range Rover Velar uses a rotary dial shifter that rises from the center console when the ignition is on.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and parking brake is applied
  2. With dead battery, the rotary shifter dial will be retracted flush with the console surface
  3. Locate the shift lock override: a small plastic cap on the center console near the base of the shifter dial area
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the cap
  5. Insert a key, small screwdriver, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, attempt to manually raise the shifter dial if possible (it may remain flush)
  7. With override engaged and brake pedal pressed (if any power available), rotate where the dial would be to the Neutral position
  8. If dial cannot be raised, the transmission may need to be placed in neutral via the transmission itself underneath the vehicle
Shift-lock override location
Small plastic cap near the base of the center console shifter area, exact position varies but typically forward or to the side of the dial recess
With zero electrical power
With complete power loss, the rotary dial remains retracted and the shift lock override may not fully release the transmission. If the override does not allow shifter movement, accessing the transmission's manual release underneath the vehicle may be necessary. Alternatively, jump-starting the 12V battery even briefly can allow normal shifter operation.
