The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly applied and wheels are chocked.
- Turn the ignition key to position II (ON) if battery has any charge.
- Locate the shift lock override access - look for a small cover or slot near the base of the shifter on the console, typically on the left or front side of the shifter surround.
- Remove the small cover cap (it may pull off or require prying with a flathead screwdriver).
- Press the brake pedal if electrical power is available.
- Insert a small screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press or pull the release mechanism.
- While holding the override actuated, press the button on the shifter and move the lever to Neutral.
- The vehicle can now be moved; note that P38A Range Rovers with air suspension should have the suspension set to high mode if possible before towing, and flat-towing is generally not recommended - use a flatbed.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the mechanical shift lock override will still function. However, the steering lock will remain engaged and cannot be released without power. Additionally, if the vehicle has air suspension (most P38As do), the suspension will drop to its lowest setting without power, making loading difficult. Use a flatbed and be prepared to manually jack or use blocks to load the vehicle. The transmission can be placed in Neutral mechanically using the override.
