🚨 2020 Lexus ES 250 AWD: Emergency Neutral
The 2020 ES 250 AWD uses an electronic shift-by-wire console-mounted lever (similar to the ES 350/300h of this generation) with a P button and gate for R/N/D/S selections.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly.
- Press the brake pedal and attempt to start the ignition or press the START button twice (without brake) to enter accessory mode—this may provide enough power to release the shift lock.
- If the shifter remains locked in Park, locate the shift-lock override: it is a small rectangular or oval slot on the left side of the shifter base, usually covered by a small cap marked with a symbol or the word 'SHIFT LOCK'.
- Use a fingernail, key, or small flathead screwdriver to carefully pry off the cover cap.
- Insert a small screwdriver or the emergency key into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the P button on top of the shifter (if needed) and then move the lever to the N (Neutral) position.
- Keep the override depressed until the lever is in Neutral.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or towed.
Shift-lock override location
Left side of the shifter base, near the driver's side, covered by a small cap—usually marked 'SHIFT LOCK' or with a symbol.
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter and steering lock will not function. Use the shift-lock override to release the shifter into Neutral. The steering wheel will remain locked unless you can turn the wheel slightly while turning the key or START button. For a dead battery, a flatbed tow is strongly recommended, as the steering lock and electronic parking brake (if engaged) may not release.
