🚨 2005 Lexus ES 300: Emergency Neutral

The 2005 ES 300 (XV30 generation, final year) uses a traditional floor-mounted console shift lever with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly.
  2. If the battery has any power, turn the ignition to ON or ACC.
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal.
  4. Locate the shift-lock override cover—a small rectangular plastic cover directly to the right of the shifter base on the console.
  5. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cover.
  6. Insert the screwdriver into the shift-lock override slot revealed beneath the cover.
  7. While pressing down on the override mechanism with the screwdriver, move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
  8. Keep the screwdriver inserted and held down until the shifter is fully in Neutral position.

With zero electrical power
With no electrical power, the mechanical shift-lock override is your only option. Remove the small cover to the right of the shifter base, insert a screwdriver into the slot, and press down firmly while shifting to Neutral. The mechanical override physically releases the shifter lock pawl and does not require any electrical power to function.
