⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly.
- If the battery has any power, turn the ignition to ON or ACC.
- Press and hold the brake pedal.
- Locate the shift-lock override cover—a small rectangular plastic cover directly to the right of the shifter base on the console.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cover.
- Insert the screwdriver into the shift-lock override slot revealed beneath the cover.
- While pressing down on the override mechanism with the screwdriver, move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
- Keep the screwdriver inserted and held down until the shifter is fully in Neutral position.

With zero electrical power
With no electrical power, the mechanical shift-lock override is your only option. Remove the small cover to the right of the shifter base, insert a screwdriver into the slot, and press down firmly while shifting to Neutral. The mechanical override physically releases the shifter lock pawl and does not require any electrical power to function.
