🚨 2008 Lexus GS 450h: Emergency Neutral
The 2008 GS 450h uses an electronically-controlled monostable shifter lever on the center console that returns to center position after each shift input.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- If any 12V power is available, turn the ignition to ON (press POWER button without brake pedal, or insert key and turn to ON)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Move the shift lever to N (neutral) position—push forward once from P
- If the shifter will not move due to shift lock, locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small covered slot near the base of the shifter on the console, typically on the right side or front
- Remove the small cover cap by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver or key
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or the override tool from the cargo area into the override slot
- While pressing down on the override mechanism and holding the brake pedal, move the shifter to N
- If the vehicle has absolutely no 12V power, the electronic shifter will NOT function—proceed to tow-mode preparation
- With the vehicle in N and parking brake released, it can be pushed or winched onto a flatbed
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot near the shifter base on the center console, typically on the right side or front—exact location may vary; remove cap to access
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter and shift-lock system are completely inoperative. The transmission must be placed in tow mode mechanically, or the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with wheels free. Do NOT attempt to flat-tow without proper tow-mode engagement. The 12V battery is in the trunk—jump-starting from the under-hood jump terminals may restore enough power to shift to N.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The GS 450h hybrid system uses a CVT-type transmission. NEVER flat-tow this vehicle with drive wheels on the ground unless the transmission is in proper tow/neutral mode. Improper towing will cause severe transmission damage. Flatbed transport is strongly recommended. If rollback/dolly towing is necessary, rear wheels must be OFF the ground (front-wheel dolly) or the driveshaft must be disconnected (not practical for emergency situations). Consult the owner's manual for the specific tow-mode procedure involving the transmission, as the electronic N position alone may not be sufficient for long-distance towing.
