⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and parking brake is engaged
- The shift-lock override slot is located on the center console near the shift buttons - look for a small rectangular cover directly adjacent to the shifter assembly on the right side
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key from your key fob to pry off the override cover cap
- With the ignition in ACC or ON position (if 12V power available), press firmly into the override slot while pressing the N button
- If successful, the transmission will shift to Neutral and the indicator will show N on the instrument cluster
- If the hybrid system cannot power on at all, the vehicle MUST be flatbedded - do not attempt to tow with wheels on the ground

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shift system cannot operate. You must jump-start the 12V auxiliary battery (located in trunk, right side) to get at least ACC power to activate the shifter. The 12V battery powers the shift-by-wire system even though the hybrid drive battery is separate.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The GS 450h is a hybrid with electronically-controlled transmission. If the hybrid system cannot initialize, the transmission will remain locked in Park. Never tow with drive wheels on the ground - hybrid transaxle damage will occur. Always use a flatbed. If you must load onto a flatbed without neutral, the vehicle must be dolly-lifted or winched with rear wheels off the ground.
