🚨 2014 Lexus GS 450h: Emergency Neutral

The 2014 GS 450h (fourth generation) features an electronically-controlled monostable shifter lever on the center console that returns to center position after each input.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure parking brake is set and vehicle is secure
  2. Locate the shift-lock override release: it is a small covered slot on the lower left side of the shifter base on the center console
  3. Remove the small rectangular cover cap using a flathead screwdriver or the emergency key from your key fob
  4. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position (requires 12V power)
  5. Insert the key or small screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, move the shift lever to the N (Neutral) position - push lever forward from Park
  7. The multi-information display should indicate Neutral; if not, verify override is fully depressed and repeat
  8. Release the override; the vehicle should now be in Neutral for towing

With zero electrical power
The shift-by-wire system requires 12V power to operate. With completely dead 12V battery, you must jump-start or charge the auxiliary 12V battery (located in the trunk, right side behind a panel) to obtain at least ACC power. Once you have 12V power, the shift-lock override will allow access to Neutral. Without any power, the transmission remains electronically locked in Park.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL HYBRID WARNING: The GS 450h has an electronically-controlled hybrid transaxle. If the vehicle cannot be shifted to Neutral because the 12V system is dead and cannot be jump-started, the vehicle MUST be transported on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground. Never tow with any drive wheels touching the ground - the hybrid transaxle will suffer severe damage. If you must load without Neutral, use wheel dollies or a flatbed with a winch, dragging only with rear wheels in the air for short distances onto the bed.
