The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if possible (battery power available)
- Locate the shift lock override: look for a small rectangular cover to the left and slightly forward of the shifter base on the console
- Use a flathead screwdriver or ignition key to carefully pry off the small cover cap
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the exposed override slot and press down firmly
- While holding down the override, press the brake pedal (if power available) and shift to Neutral
- If no power, maintain pressure on the override and move the shifter to Neutral without brake pedal
