🚨 2024 Lexus GX 550: Emergency Neutral
The 2024 GX 550 uses an electronically controlled console-mounted shifter with electronic shift-by-wire system.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- Press the START button twice without pressing the brake pedal to reach ACC mode (if 12V battery has charge)
- Locate the shift lock override access: look for a small cover panel on the left side of the shifter base or in the console storage area near the shifter
- Remove the cover by prying carefully with a flathead screwdriver or trim tool
- Insert a screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
- While maintaining pressure on the override, move the shifter to Neutral position
- If the vehicle has a Transfer Case neutral setting and you need to flat-tow (DO NOT DO THIS - see warning), you would need to access transfer case controls separately
Shift-lock override location
Small cover panel on the left side of shifter base or nearby console area; exact location may vary - check owner's manual section on 'Shift Lock Override' for precise location
With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the shift lock override should still function mechanically, but the shift-by-wire system may not allow gear changes. You may need to jump the 12V battery to at least ACC mode. The hybrid system does not need to be READY, but some 12V power is typically required for the shifter electronics to respond.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The GX 550 is a hybrid with an electric motor integrated into the transmission. NEVER tow with any wheels on the ground, even in Neutral or with transfer case in neutral. The electric motor and hybrid transaxle components will be severely damaged if rotated without the hybrid system active. FLATBED ONLY. Moving the vehicle short distances (under 50 feet) at walking speed for loading is acceptable, but no extended rolling or towing.
