The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and set the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift-lock override slot - it is a small covered opening on the left side of the shifter base, near the console sidewall
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to remove the override cover cap
- While firmly depressing the brake pedal, insert the tool into the override slot and press down
- While holding the override down, move the shifter to Neutral
- If the vehicle has zero electrical power, you must jump-start the 12V battery minimally to unlock the shifter - there is no mechanical-only bypass on this hybrid model

With completely dead 12V battery, the shift lock cannot be overridden mechanically. You must provide jump power to the 12V battery (located under the hood) to energize the shift-lock solenoid before the override will function. Even brief power is sufficient.
