⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure parking brake is firmly set
- Turn the ignition to ON (press power button twice without brake pedal, or use key to ON position)
- Locate the shift-lock override release - it is under a small rectangular cap directly in front of the shifter, between the shifter base and the cup holders
- Pry up the override cover cap with a small flathead screwdriver
- Fully depress the brake pedal
- Insert the screwdriver into the exposed override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral

With zero electrical power
If 12V battery is completely dead, the ignition cannot reach ON mode and the shift-lock remains engaged. Jump the 12V battery (in trunk, right side) with another vehicle or jump pack to provide minimal power. Once the dash illuminates, follow the normal override procedure. The hybrid system does not need to be READY - 12V power alone is sufficient.

HYBRID WARNING: Never tow with drive wheels on the ground for more than minimal distances at low speeds. The HS 250h transaxle can generate voltage when wheels rotate, potentially damaging the hybrid system. Use flatbed towing whenever possible. If vehicle must be moved short distances in Neutral with dead battery, ensure hybrid system is completely off and move slowly.
