⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and the parking brake is firmly applied
- Attempt to turn the ignition to ON or ACC mode if any battery power remains
- Firmly depress and hold the brake pedal
- Locate the shift lock override access - there is a small rectangular cover panel on the left front side of the shifter assembly near the base
- Use the mechanical key blade or a small flathead screwdriver to carefully pry off the override cover
- Insert the key blade or screwdriver into the exposed override slot and push down firmly
- While holding the override mechanism down and maintaining brake pressure, move the shift lever rearward to Neutral position
- The shifter may require significant force; continue holding override until shifter is fully in Neutral
- Remove the tool and verify Neutral position (typically indicated on the dash if any power present)

With zero electrical power
With complete power loss, the electronic shifter lock remains engaged. Use the mechanical override: remove the cover panel on the left side of the shifter base, insert a rigid tool into the override slot, and depress firmly while moving the shifter to Neutral. The brake pedal switch is bypassed when using mechanical override with no power. Note that the electronic Park button becomes non-functional; you must rely on the parking brake and wheel chocks.
