⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and set the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON mode if possible (press START button without brake pedal twice).
- Locate the shift lock override slot on the right side of the shifter base, beneath a small rectangular cover cap.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cover cap.
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal if 12V power is available, then move the shifter to N (Neutral).
- If the hybrid system will not power on at all, you must use the mechanical override while manually releasing the parking brake—have the vehicle ready for immediate flatbed loading.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the hybrid system cannot initialize and the shift-by-wire system is completely inoperative. The shift lock override allows mechanical release of the shifter, but the transmission may not engage neutral electronically. The parking brake is electronic and will remain engaged. This vehicle MUST be flatbedded with all wheels off the ground—do not attempt to tow with any wheels on the ground.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The LC 500h is a rear-wheel-drive hybrid with electric motors integrated into the drivetrain. NEVER tow this vehicle with the rear wheels on the ground under ANY circumstances, even in neutral, as this will cause severe damage to the hybrid transaxle and electric motors. Flatbed transport with all four wheels off the ground is the ONLY safe method. The electronic parking brake cannot be released without 12V power—if the battery is completely dead, the rear wheels will remain locked.
