🚨 1990-2000 Lexus LS 400: Emergency Neutral
The 1990-2000 LS 400 (XF10 and XF20 generations) uses a column-mounted automatic shifter with electronic shift lock interlock controlled by the brake light switch.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and the vehicle is on level ground
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position (if battery allows)
- Locate the shift lock override - on most models, there is a small rectangular access slot on the right side of the column shifter housing, typically covered by a plastic cap or trim piece
- Remove the plastic cap using a small flathead screwdriver
- Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, pull the shifter toward you to move it out of Park
- Shift to Neutral and release the override
- The vehicle can now be moved or towed

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the ignition key may not turn and the steering column will remain locked. The mechanical shift lock override should still function to release the shifter from Park. You may need to rock the vehicle gently to relieve pressure on the transmission park pawl. If you cannot unlock the steering column, you must provide 12V power (jump box or jumper cables) to at least unlock the steering before attempting to move the vehicle. For flatbed loading with locked steering, the vehicle must be loaded from the rear with the front wheels on dollies or the steering mechanically secured.
