🚨 2008 Lexus LS 460: Emergency Neutral

The 2008 LS 460 uses an electronic console-mounted shifter with shift-by-wire technology and electronic parking brake, identical in function to the 2007 model.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground with the electronic parking brake engaged
  2. If any 12V power is available, push the start button twice (without brake pedal) to reach ignition ON
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal
  4. Locate the shift lock override - a small button or slot on the left side of the shifter base, typically covered by a removable plastic cover
  5. Press the override button while attempting to move the shifter to Neutral
  6. Note: With shift-by-wire, the shifter may move but the transmission may not respond without sufficient electrical power
  7. If successful, the dash should indicate Neutral; if not, 12V power must be provided
  8. The electronic parking brake must have power to release - if it will not disengage, the vehicle cannot roll and must be flatbed towed with rear wheels lifted
Shift-lock override location
Small button or slot on the left side of the console shifter base, under a removable plastic cover typically labeled 'SHIFT LOCK' or with an icon
With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the shift-by-wire system will not function. The mechanical shift lock override releases only the shifter gate lock, NOT the transmission itself. You must provide 12V power via jumper cables or a jump box to enable the shift-by-wire system to communicate with the transmission control module. Once power is supplied, follow normal shifting procedure (ignition ON, brake pressed, shift to Neutral). The electronic parking brake also requires power to release. For flatbed recovery with no ability to jump-start, load the vehicle with rear wheels raised or on dollies to prevent damage to the parking brake system.
