🚨 2020 Lexus LS 500h: Emergency Neutral

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and set the parking brake firmly
- Press the POWER button twice without pressing the brake pedal to activate accessory mode (some electrical systems will activate)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- While holding the brake, move the shifter to the N (Neutral) position by pushing it forward briefly – the shifter will return to center but the transmission will be in Neutral
- Verify Neutral is engaged by checking the instrument cluster display shows 'N'
- If you cannot achieve accessory power: Locate the shift lock override slot, which is a small covered opening near the base of the shifter console on the left side
- Remove the cover cap using a small flat tool
- Insert a key or small screwdriver into the override slot and push down while simultaneously moving the shifter forward to Neutral
- The shifter must be moved within a few seconds of pressing the override

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, you must use the mechanical shift lock override. The hybrid system will not engage without any 12V power. Access the override slot near the shifter base, remove the cap, insert a key or screwdriver and press down while moving shifter forward to N. The transmission will mechanically release into Neutral.

CRITICAL: The LS 500h is a hybrid with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). This vehicle should ONLY be transported on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground. Do NOT tow with any wheels on the ground, as the electric motor and CVT can be severely damaged even in Neutral. If you must roll the vehicle a very short distance for loading (less than 50 feet at walking speed), Neutral is acceptable, but prolonged rolling or any highway-speed towing will destroy the transaxle.
