⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and set the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON mode if possible (if the 12V battery has enough charge)
- Locate the shift-lock override cover: it is a small rectangular cap on the left side of the shifter base, near the bottom of the shift gate
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the shift-lock override cover
- Insert the screwdriver or a key into the override slot revealed beneath the cover
- While pressing down firmly on the override release, press the brake pedal and move the shifter to Neutral
- If the 12V battery is completely dead, you will need to jump-start the 12V battery or provide external power to the vehicle's 12V system before shifting is possible
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can roll freely; maintain control with the parking brake and chocks

The LS 500h requires at least minimal 12V power to the shift-by-wire system to release the shifter. If the 12V battery is completely dead, you must jump-start the 12V system (the 12V battery is typically in the trunk) or provide external power before the shift-lock override will function. The hybrid high-voltage system does not need to be active, but the 12V electronics must have power.

CRITICAL: The LS 500h is a hybrid and should only be towed with all wheels OFF the ground (flatbed or wheel-lift with dollies). DO NOT tow with drive wheels on the ground—this can spin the electric motor/generators and severely damage the hybrid transaxle and electrical systems even in Neutral. For tow mode preparation: ensure the vehicle is in Neutral, turn the ignition OFF, and ensure the parking brake is released before loading onto a flatbed.
