⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge (this may release the shift lock automatically)
- If shifter remains locked, locate the small shift-lock override button on the left side of the shifter shroud near the base of the column shifter
- Remove the small cover cap (if present) to access the override button
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool and press the override button firmly
- While holding the override button down, press the brake pedal (if possible) and move the shifter from Park to Neutral
- If brake pedal cannot be pressed, continue holding override and move shifter directly to Neutral
Shift-lock override location
Small button access point on the left side of the column shifter shroud near the base, typically covered by a small cap that can be pried off
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift-lock override button is mechanical and will still function. Turn the key to ACC position manually (does not require electrical power) to unlock the steering wheel if needed for towing. The override button physically releases the shift-lock solenoid allowing shifter movement without any electrical power.
