⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge (this may release the shift lock automatically)
- If shifter remains locked, locate the shift-lock override slot near the base of the shifter on the console
- Look for a small rectangular cover or slot to the right or front-right of the shifter base
- Carefully pry off the cover cap using a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool
- Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override mechanism down, press the shifter button and move from Park to Neutral
- If no power is available, you may need to apply force while holding the override to move the shifter
Shift-lock override location
Console area near the base of the center shifter, typically to the right or front-right side of the shifter base, covered by a small rectangular cap
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, turn the key to ACC position manually to unlock the steering wheel. The shift-lock override is mechanical and will function without power, but the electronic shifter may feel stiff. You may need to apply firm pressure on the override mechanism while moving the shifter. If absolutely no movement is possible, the vehicle may require jump-starting or a 12V power source to energize the shifter electronics sufficiently for towing preparation.
