⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is firmly engaged
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift-lock override slot on the driver's side of the shifter base, underneath a small rectangular cap marked with a key symbol
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the mechanical key from your key fob to pry off the override cap
- Insert the screwdriver or key fully into the override slot
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If no brake pressure is available, continue holding the override down while moving directly to Neutral

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, you cannot start the engine but can still access the shift-lock override. The override is mechanical and does not require electrical power. Insert key/screwdriver into override slot and hold down while shifting to Neutral. The steering wheel will remain locked, so the vehicle must be towed with front wheels off the ground or on a flatbed.
