⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and parking brake is engaged (or vehicle is chocked if no power for parking brake)
- Insert the key into the ignition and turn to ACC or ON position if battery has any residual charge
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small covered slot on the left side of the shifter base, near the front of the center console
- Remove the small cap/cover from the shift lock override slot by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver or trim tool
- While pressing the brake pedal (if vehicle has power) OR while inserting a small screwdriver or key into the override slot and pressing down, move the shift lever from Park to Neutral
- If using the override with no power: insert tool into override slot, press down firmly, and simultaneously move the shifter to Neutral
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or loaded onto a flatbed

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery: turn key to ACC position if possible (may not work with zero power). Use the shift lock override slot with a small screwdriver or key inserted and pressed down while moving the shifter. The override mechanically releases the shift lock solenoid.
