🚨 2008 Lexus RX 350: Emergency Neutral

The 2008 RX 350 uses a traditional console-mounted automatic transmission lever with a mechanical shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if 12V power is available (engine does not need to run).
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening covered by a plastic cap, located on the left side of the shifter base near the P position.
  4. Use the metal key blade or a small flathead screwdriver to pry off the plastic cover cap.
  5. Insert the key blade or screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, move the shifter from P to N—you may need to press the shifter button simultaneously.
  7. Release the override and remove the tool; the shifter should remain in N.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock override still functions mechanically on this generation. You will not be able to turn the ignition to ACC, but the override bypass allows the mechanical shift cable to move. Insert the key blade into the override slot, press down, and shift to neutral—the mechanical linkage will operate without power. However, without power the steering will lock; ensure the front wheels are straight before moving the vehicle.
