⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and set the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if possible (if battery has any charge).
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening covered by a removable cap, positioned directly forward and to the left of the shifter base on the console.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the small cap covering the override slot.
- Insert the screwdriver or key straight down into the override slot and press firmly downward while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if power available) and moving the shifter to Neutral.
- If no power is available and the shifter will not move, maintain downward pressure on the override while pulling the shifter toward Neutral position—this may require significant force.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed.

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock override must be manually depressed while physically forcing the shifter to Neutral. The brake pedal will be very stiff without brake assist. If the steering wheel is locked, you will need to turn the physical key in the ignition to ACC to unlock steering before the vehicle can roll or be steered.
