⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly (use wheel chocks as primary safety).
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if 12V power is available (press POWER button without brake pedal once or twice).
- Locate the shift lock override cover—a small rectangular cap directly to the left of the shifter base, near the driver's side.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the shift lock override cover.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If no power available, continue to step 7.
- With override pressed, you may need to apply firm pressure on the shifter button while moving to Neutral—the mechanical override releases the solenoid lock.
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular cover cap directly to the left of the shifter base (driver's side of the shifter), approximately 1 inch from the shifter gate.
With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery: the shift lock override still functions mechanically. Access the override slot as described, press down firmly, and manipulate the shifter—you may need significant force on the shifter button. The hybrid system will not engage, but the transmission parking pawl can be released mechanically. You may need to jump the 12V battery minimally (just for accessory power) to release the steering lock on some units.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: RX 450h is a hybrid—NEVER tow with drive wheels on the ground with the hybrid system powered off. The transaxle contains motor-generators that will be damaged by forced rotation without system initialization. Flatbed or dolly under front wheels ONLY. If attempting to load onto flatbed, the vehicle MUST be in Neutral and you may need to briefly initialize the hybrid system (READY mode) to release transmission fully, then power down before towing. Consult flatbed operator—skates/dollies may be required.
